One of the more exciting stories that came out of PAX East 2010 this past week revolved around a twenty-year old kid and his quest to steal an unreleased video game months or even years before it hits retail stores later this year. Apparently the young criminal-in-training was attempting to copy files of the upcoming shooter from the team at Atomic Games, titled Breach, from the expo test machines to his own Dell laptop computer. A couple of Quality Assurance and PAX East Enforcers noticed something weird was going on and began to ask him questions. Right around this time he spun around and took off running, like a nerd running from a wild pack of high-school jocks.
As is the case with most of us gamers Justin D. May didn't have the stamina to make it very far, eventually getting cornered right outside the expo doors. He surrendered to expo security without incident and was put inside a holding room until Boston police could arrive on the scene. The investigators later found only 10-15MB worth of the game that had actually gotten copied over (it would have taken a couple hundred times that for him to actually boot the game up). A couple times during questioning May also tried to bribe the PAX security by offering them "a hundred dollars, just to make all this go away." The thief was taken down to central booking where he could face up to 5 years in jail and/or a hefty $30,000 fine. The intellectual property stolen was valued over a couple million dollars, resulting in a very serious crime, if convicted. The biggest update to this story is that May decided to skip town, his arraignment was Monday morning and he was nowhere to be seen; the judge issued an arrest warrant for him so if you have any idea who this person is please let us know (ultimalaw@gmail.com). His booking picture has been posted below for your viewing pleasure:
