The saga of the COGs that has played out over the course of the last 4 years has been a wild ride as we have followed Marcus and co. above and below ground in their final stands against the Locust. After the conclusion of GoW2 it became quite obvious that we would be seeing our ragtag group of heroes once more, most likely in a stunning conclusion and the final, final…final stand of the citizens of Sera. Sure enough, our main man Cliff Bleszinski will no doubt be announcing that we won’t have to wait long to see the fall of locust or the fall of man in April 2011. The series has been phenomenal up to this point, with a few annoyances but great thrill rides nonetheless. There are a number of additions/changes that could really make the conclusion harrowing and be considered the best in the series and here at Planet Xbox 360 we have a few ideas/hopes that could make Gears of War 3 a love letter to fans. (Readers BEWARE, there are SPOILERS from GoW 1 and 2 below!)

A Sera-Shaking Conclusion: When we last saw the COGs they decided that sinking their beloved city Jacinto in order to flood the locust tunnels would ensure the salvation of their kind. It seems to have subdued the locust, but the transmission from Marcus’ dad Adam Phoenix says otherwise when the transmission asks “What have you done?” Were not quite sure if Adam was referring to the sinking of Jacinto or what he was referring to, but it seems as though he will play a large role in the finale whether is alive or dead. Either way, it is hard to say what the story might be in GoW3. Sera is in complete shambles and mankind is running out of places to have a last stand. It seems as though the locust will most likely all be forced to the surface due to the flooding of their tunnels unless they turn out to be champion swimmers. Will the COGs find a way to wipe out the Locust all at once or will they be forced to find a way of evacuating the planet entirely? It’s hard to say where the plot might go from here, but we certainly expect to see more on the Civil War between the Locust and Lambent Locust, the return of Adam Phoenix in some fashion, and possibly a big reveal on the background of the Locust, a species that seems to have much more to them than meets the eye. The first two games have had a well crafted story and universe to boot, so we have high hopes for the third to be a thrilling conclusion for the series.
Let There Be Blood: GoW has always been known for its unforgiving levels of violence, especially the brutal finishing moves. GoW2 explored adding more of these finishers having at least one for each weapon. Each more jaw-dropping than the last but sadly there was only a total of 11, with a few being repeated more often than not. Finishers became a favorite pastime of ours while playing through the campaign, and adding more of these graceful killing moves to the third will only make bigger grins amongst the masses. While on the subject of violence, the lancer is a much loved weapon in the current generation so it wouldn’t be unfortunate if it stole the show more often. We love grinding Locust to shreds, but we would love to see some new moves for the lancer and some more creative uses of the chainsaw. It’s capable of creating a symphony of gore, so more creative lancer kills would be delightful.

Fearsome Foursome: GoW is almost painful to play alone; it is a co-op experience if we’ve ever played one but imagine having two more people play through the campaign. It has certainly been done before and it seems as though four player co-op would only make the game that much more intense. Imagine synchronized lancer kills… enough said. The previous games split off players from time to time so it would be interesting to see how four players would affect the mechanic. GoW’s campaign often has COGs in groups of four or more, so don’t be surprised if GoW3 includes this as one of its newest additions.
