Zombies, zombies, everywhere you look you’ll find zombies! One of the biggest trends in horror movies and games currently is going to be reinvigorated by Capcom’s Dead Rising 2, the follow up Keiji Inafune’s 2006 zombie brawler Dead Rising. Instead of the project being developed in house at Capcom, Dead Rising 2 is in the capable hands of Blue Castle Games, developers of 2K’s The Bigs. Dead Rising was highly original due to the fact that it was a comedic spin on your average everyday zombie game, so it’s no doubt that fans of the original are dying to get a hold of a new entry in the series. Dead Rising 2 takes place a couple of years after the events of the first. Frank West, the much loved journalist/protagonist of the first is out, Chuck Greene, former motocross champion is in. The zombie virus that the original was based around has spread throughout the United States. The story revolves around Chuck’s escapades as he searches for his missing daughter in Fortune City, modeled after Las Vegas/ Atlantic City. Chuck will also have to take part in a depraved game show called “Terror is Reality” as he tears, chops, and brawls his way through Fortune City. The game will also carry over the 72 hour mode that the first revolved around keeping you on your toes as you decimate tens of thousands of zombies.

As far as what has happened to Frank West, we aren’t really sure at this point. But Capcom will be releasing a bridge between the two games on Xbox Live sometime before Dead Rising 2 is released called Dead Rising: Case Zero. The prequel will serve as a method of connecting the two stories and it will also give players a taste of DR2. In hopes of improving the great gameplay from the first, Blue Castle Games have removed the photography element from the original and look to be implementing a weapon creation element with duct tape seeming to be very prevalent in trailers and screens. Chuck looks to have chainsaws strapped to just about anything with duct tape. Yes, it is extremely ludicrous, but it is also very original. If there was one thing that really made the first game enjoyable, it was the vast amounts of objects that could be used to kill, so the addition of a weapon creation system sounds genius.

The developers claim that the game is capable of having 6,000 zombies on screen at the same time as opposed to the original which could only display 800 at any given time, giving the player the feeling that they are truly in the middle of a huge zombie apocalypse. Blue Castle also promises a greater variation of missions, as the first had a few moments of repetition mainly with the escort missions. However, the biggest addition to DR2 will be a new multiplayer mode based around the “Terror is Reality” game show in which four players partake in demented games involving the destruction of zombies. The gore-tastic minigames vary from rolling over zombies in a massive hamster ball, to seeing how many pounds of zombie flesh you can rack up on an antler helmet. The multiplayer sounds like it has the potential to be a great party game, and looks much like a bloody twist on American Gladiators.

It was just revealed that the game will include 2-player online co-op, who can think of a better way to eradicate zombies than with a buddy over Xbox LIVE. Dead Rising 2 is shaping up to surpass the original in almost every way, boasting more weapons, more zombies and new multiplayer modes; and improving just about every single aspect of the game. Let’s hope that the series is in good hands with the young studio that is developing it. DR2 is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated titles of 2010. Get your chainsaws, motorcycles and duct tape ready, because on August 31st, Chuck’s going to paint Fortune City red.
