Gears of War Freebies on the Horizon

by Nelson Rodriguez

The number one cry from fans around the world about Epic's record-breaking shooter is "we want more!"  If Epic means what they say, we're all about to get what we've asked for.  Speaking at the Spike TV Video Game Awards, Epic president Mike Capps made some statements that have Gearsheads in a happy frenzy.  As reported by Gamespot, Capps made it clear that Epic has been working on downloadable add-on content for Gears of War for quite some time, and intends to give it away for free.

Specifically responding to the question of how Epic plans to keep Gears successful on the sales charts, Capps said "We always take care of our customers, we always give them stuff for free, and we're going to keep doing that forever. That's how we do it. This is Epic."

Capps did not let spill any word on timeline or what the content will be made up of, but this would be a lovely Christmas gift, indeed.  Could we be looking at new multiplayer maps?  New co-op campaigns?  (please... please!)  We will all have to wait to find out

Considering what Epic probably had to spend in order to bring us one of the best, and arguably most beautiful games since the dawn of man, I think $60 is very reasonable. I don't realistically expect more for free. If they do it, that is very much appreciated, but not expected. I WANT to encourage companies to follow up with additional content at a reasonable rate. I DON'T want it to spiral into ridiculousness like the cell phone downloadable content market. The occasional free, high-quality download keeps things in check...reminding everyone on both sides that there's no need to get greedy, or support that greed. Thank you Epic.

I'm hoping all the franchises take note of Epic. Not only giving the "extras" away for free but in making great games. I feel like Gears has set the bar in the next stage of game playing.

i agree. after a $60 price tag (or higher if u got the collectors tin), unless its a huge mappack addon we shouldnt be nickled and dimed to death. If its dirt cheap and a good addon, its worth it, but atleast everyone isnt as penny pinching as EA.... seriously.. GO EPIC! (this better not just be some pic pack.. or ill.. ill... go play another game!)

EA is way below Epic, dont even compare them. That would be cool, I like that. I payed my $60 I shouldnt have to pay more to keep my games good.

This would such a great move on Epic's part. Not only will this generate a lot of positive PR, but it will increase sales of the franchise in the long run. EA needs to take lessons from Epic on how to run their business.
