3. Transformers: War for Cybertron – Tuesday, June 22nd - I know what you thinking and believe me I thought it was going to suck too after watching the second Transformers film last summer. After all, just about anyone has to accept that as summer-blockbuster-esque as that damn franchise is, it has suffered a bit of a beating in the hands of Michael Bay. Thankfully, it seems that this title has nothing to do with the film save that Peter Cullen, the original voice of Optimus Prime, will be reprising his role in the game. In case you hadn’t heard, this immediately makes the game more awesome than half the stuff coming out this summer. Able to fill the role of either Autobots or Decepticons, players will additionally be able to select one of four classes: Leader, Soldier, Scout and Scientist. Seemingly blending into plain sight until the very last moment, it should be interesting to say the least for anyone who likes giant, ass kicking robots.
2. Green Day: Rock Band – Tuesday, June 8th - Following in the wake of the successful Beatles: Rock Band, it seems only apropos that Harmonix select Green Day for their next title. While The Beatles can be identified with musically across the span of several generations, Green Day is more or less able to be reconciled with kids born in the 80’s and growing up in the 1990’s. Not the proverbial voice of multiple generations as The Beatles were able to be, Green Day can still lay claim to being exceptionally influential in the development of music over the last two decades. Suffice to say, it is more than fitting that they receive their own Rock Band game and with Harmonix at the helm, it’ll definitely be a game to stand out against the continued static of Guitar Hero.
1. Alpha Protocol – Tuesday, June 1st - The perpetually delayed, third-person, action espionage-rpg is finally going to be sneaking on to a console near you. While there are many doubts if the game is still up to muster after having endured a small stint in development limbo, the last several bits of content released from Sega have been more than enough to continue whetting the appetites of those who have followed the game since it was first announced. While it does have a few Mass Effect mechanics embedded into it, it still seems strikingly capable of standing up on its own. Kick off your summer with Alpha Protocol and it just might be a summer to remember – that is if you don’t get thrown out of the house and told to go play with that funny looking kid across the street.
Honestly, whether or not you plan on spending summer camped out on the couch or only visiting your console on a rainy day, it can’t be denied that there is some genuinely excellent content on the horizon for gamers.
