Since the dawn of gaming, players have spent most of their time doing harm to creatures of various sorts. Some of the original games saw you chomping ghosts or blasting invading aliens from the sky. In most games it’s done for some noble or legitimate purpose, i.e. rescuing others or yourself from certain doom, saving the planet from a hostile takeover or foiling a villain’s plans for universal domination. The various minions you might have to defeat in droves over your quest are many and varied, so we thought it’d be good to give them some recognition. Without further ado I present the top 10 video game enemies we like to kill.
10) Rats: These squeaking rodents have achieved a limited degree of acceptance as pets but most people still cringe at the sight of them. They’re perfect for nearly any setting, be it medieval fantasy or futuristic urban cyberpunk. Their tenacity and swarm tactics make them a great candidate for low-level foes. The gigantic mutant versions of these furry fanged beings are equally horrific and fun to slay.

9) Bandits/Raiders: In the best of times or the worst of times there are always some who would rather earn their living by extortion, robbery and intimidation rather than by honest labor. Depending on the setting they might be extorting protection money from shop owners, waylaying carriages in a forest or preying upon the meager remains of civilization. Whether you’re battling these vicious brigands because they’re terrorizing innocents, simply happened to choose the wrong day to hassle you or simply because you feel that taking them out to steal their stuff is both useful and ironic, they’re a guilt-free, low calorie foe.
8) Soldiers: Despite the debate over whether or not members of a military force can be held accountable for their actions, there’s no question that guilt rarely rises in video games. It might be because the enemy troops are usually clad in body armor and face-obscuring masks that rob them of any sense of individuality. Couple that with the fact that very few video games have your people/faction/nation as the aggressor and you can put any qualms behind you. I’ve yet to play a game where in infiltrating an enemy base I heard two infantrymen swapping stories about their sweethearts back home or how much they missed the family farm. That would be sure to tug on my heartstrings a little bit as I shredded those dreams of a peaceful future.
