Absolutely magnificent is the simplest phrase I can use to relate my feelings about Blur so far. Offering players what many who grew up playing Mario Kart will have caught themselves wishing for on more than one occasion and while Mario Kart has been around for a little over a decade, that doesn’t make it a bad game. It merely has failed to adequately adapt to the times or the audience that grew up playing the original. Where successive iterations of Mario Kart only gave players one or two new features to expect, a single release of Blur has seemingly revamped a good deal of what has started making Nintendo’s series come off as contrived. Both games possess the ability to cater to niche audiences, however, what makes Blur pose such a danger to Mario Kart is the subtle differences presented that appeal to players who have long since grown up, and perhaps, away from Nintendo.

5. Career Mode: Mario Kart has a problem with lacking a true career mode. The only incentive gamers have ever had to go through each cup alone has been to unlock a new character for one reason or another. The biggest contention here is that Blur not only has a slick interface to go with a spectacular career mode, the ability to unlock various items and achievements by progressing through the challenges and ladders will keep anyone busy long after they would’ve put Nintendo’s perennial Kart-racer aside. To add icing on the digital cake, Bizarre Creations knew what they were doing when assembling the single-player experience as it has an exceptional amount of that Geometry Wars addiction to it. Unlocking a character through some obscure means might be okay for some players, but unlocking a slew of new vehicles by kicking ass and taking names easily allows Blur to stand above the competition.
