Behind the Game: Transformers: War for Cybertron

    by Garrett Grothe

We recently had the chance to sit down and get down to the nitty-gritty with some of the team behind the upcoming Transformers: War for Cybertron. From these interviews we gained a great deal of confidence that High Moon Studios were all extremely passionate about the beloved franchise that they were working on and it was also extremely evident in the great hands-on time that we spent with the game (click here). Up first is Matt Tieger, Game Director on Transformers: War for Cybertron sat down with PlanetXbox360 and answered a number of questions concerning the soon-to-be-released Xbox 360 game.

PlanetXbox360: First and foremost thank you for taking the time to talk with us about your upcoming game. Why three player co-op in the new Transformers game, instead of four?

Matt Tieger: That’s a great question, three players was one I was actually persistent about. 2 players is a buddy picture, 3 players is the smallest number for a team. Transformers are about teamwork and the Autobots often succeed because they use teamwork and Decepticons often fail because they don’t use teamwork. Why not four? Three was the number we could get the best quality to team ratio. The other thing that was nice about three is that now I’ve got three guaranteed characters in the level to move the story forward.

PX360: On the multiplayer side of things there is a Prime mode, much like Prestiege mode, how many times can you go through Prime mode?

Tieger: Just once, but here’s my plan, if the game sells like crazy then we can explore more areas like Prime mode and make that be more like a Call of Duty with multiple levels. I have the feeling that no matter what we put out there, people will want more. I think that when we come out, and the game is successful we will drive towards the more area. I read forum posts like crazy. It’s a game, I can have a great pitch but the reality is, all I want you to do is just #&^*#* play it, just play it and if you hate it, thank you for playing it. I challenge anyone who claims to be a big shooter fan to grab a controller and play four multiplayer matches and say it’s not very good. I don’t think that’s going to happen. I’ll commit, I’ll throw it on the table. Play it, play 5-10 minutes of multiplayer, I guarantee you’re not going to say it doesn’t feel right. It’s not going to happen, because it does feel right.

PX360: You probably can’t answer this, but is there a plan for DLC?

Tieger: That is one I can’t answer. We have not announced what our plan is and I can’t confirm or deny whether or not there is a plan. But, here’s the way I try and say it. You can probably take a pretty good guess as to what would make for some good Transformers DLC, but I can’t commit to anything. This has been a great property for me as a Transformers fan and a gamer to work on. I think Transformers fans are going to finally get the game that they’ve wanted to play.
