After our time with Matt, we moved on to a few members from the Transformers: War for Cybertron art team to see just how the characters and game came to fruition.
PX360: You guys said that First generation Transformers was the main inspiration for the WFC. What did you guys watch, look at, and play with for inspiration?
Art Team: We had TVs in our offices, so we had the original movie playing a lot basically anything we could get our hands on. We also tried to find other types of things to give the game some realistic qualities. We wanted to bring it to that epic sense. Using stuff from the 70’s such as Blade Runner, Tron anything that really influenced Science Fiction.
PX360: I thought it was cool how the world is much like a Transformer itself, everything in the environment transforms in some manner. Not really a question, but more of a nice touch.
Art: That’s important though, something we talked about from day one. Everything, bridges, computers weapons all needed to resemble the universe. We tried to stick close to the allure of the Transformers universe. We had a tremendous opportunity to take this world and spin it on its head. It was tricky maintaining the level of not too much stuff transforming to the point where it was a distraction. There are nods in the game that fans will appreciate including the alphabet we created for the game. The language came from a specific episode where the language was written on a stone and from the episode alone.
PX360: It looks like there was a lot of love put into the game!
Art: It’s not often you get to take one of the things that you really love and work on that license. For you it would be like reviewing only the game that you want to review. It was great. There are little things that would make us happy to see in the game, so we said “hey, let’s try that.”
PX360: We kind of gained the feeling that the world is more so developed around the Decepticons as opposed to the Autobots due to the heavy prevalence of the color purple. Is that safe to say?
Art: It’s probably because it’s all that has been shown up to this point, but the game has a lot more depth than that. We managed to work some of the color orange into the game (cue rimshot).
We can say that without a doubt that the men and women working on Transformers: War for Cybertron have their hearts and minds fully invested in this ambitious project. It’s not often that we see a licensed game become a well-received title, but it seems as though we may be seeing more in the future starting with Transformers: War for Cybertron. Want a taste of WfC, the multiplayer-enabled demo was released onto Xbox LIVE this past week - giving fans a chance to finally see what all the hype is about. Stay tuned to PlanetXbox360 this week as we lead up to our official review of Transformers: War for Cybertron.
