Every so often an event comes along such as a convention or major game release that warrants people to bust out some really exceptional costumes from the deepest darkest depths of their closets. But, when enthusiastic bodies don those outfits, they briefly embody what it is to combine both the greatest elements of acting with their sincere love for the video game community and all that it has to offer. Such is the case with cosplayers who work arduously hard to make sure that their costume stands out the best so that when they to step into the shoes of their favorite characters, they truly can walk a mile in their shoes. While there are tons of characters that have been cosplayed – Mario, Sephiroth and Master Chief – they all have a distinct personality to them that makes people want to inhabit them. Thus, it seems all too fitting in the wake of summer events like San Diego Comic Con that I present ten cosplays that might give you a few ideas for next year.

10. Dead Rising: This one would seem easy enough, especially if you’re going the route of playing a zombie. Although, you would run the risk of being mistaken for a Resident Evil, CoD: World at War or Left 4 Dead cosplayer, this doesn’t bar the simple fact that zombies, despite becoming the new trend, are still more awesome than a basketful of undead puppies and kittens. On the other hand, all it would take to successfully play Frank West would be a nice sports coat, shirt, slacks and a nice camera, which coincidentally would come in handy for taking picture of fellow cosplayers. While Chuck Green might be a bit more difficult, a little hunting at a motorsports store would probably yield something that would allow you to appropriately fill the role. Nonetheless, Dead Rising merely gives way to the greater genre as a whole and even though you’d think it was on the verge of being done in excess to the point that everyone would be sick of it – people still love it enough that zombies are still a perennial pop culture icon. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to mount chainsaws on a motorcycle.
9. Lost Planet: Not exactly something that should be worn in the hot California sun, but nonetheless interesting for those who have loved their time on E.D.N III a bit more than the rest of us. Whether stepping into the waterproof, insulated boots of a Snow Pirate or a vicious Nevec Special Operative – there is a gritty, grim joy that comes with adopting the façade of a resident of the bipolar planet that, as of Lost Planet 2, now straddles various environments from Jungle to Desert and even on to Industrialized Complexes beyond the simple snowy environment that seemed so endearing in the first game, which offers a vast amount of flexibility in said cosplay. While I doubt many will go the extra mile and invest the time, manual labor and creative effort in fashioning a Vital Suit, although that would be damn awesome in and of itself, the simply armor and weapons still offer a great deal of customization to expound upon the lore of Capcom’s less than friendly Hoth doppelganger planet. Besides, if someone attempted an Akrid cosplay, of any kind, that would beat just about any human costume – pending of course it didn’t look like crap.

8. Fable: This one would seem pretty easy and could theoretically double for your next trip to the Renaissance faire, which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing depending on how geeky you are. Personally, I can’t wait to head to my local Ren Faire before the end of the month, but I digress. What Peter Molyneux promised was possible in his previous two fantastical RPG romps, cosplaying potentially gives players the real possibility of making a reality. After all, who doesn’t love buckles on their boots, belts and straps that run across their chests enabling them to carry a sword in their scabbard that will no doubt have a buckle on it as well. Seriously, if your Fable cosplay has less than four buckles, odds are you’re doing it wrong. Afforded some flexibility here, this is one of the few cosplays on this list that will also allow you to carry a sword and primitive firearm of sorts; it also lets you do something on par with Final Fantasy madness while still being able to incorporate several Western or Steampunk ideas. And any costume that allows for things like goggles, buckles or colonial era clothing is always cool by me.
