Dead Rising Ships 1 Million Units, Set for Sequelby Nelson Rodriguez
Capcom has announced that they have officially shipped 1 million units of their mall crawler zombie game and they intend to crank out sequels like there's no tomorrow. The publisher has done very well with zombies in the past and sequels of Resident Evil continue to be well-received and highly anticipated by gamers.
Capcom's Mark Beaumont told gameindustry.biz that "Dead Rising has allowed us to establish a new franchise that we can use for years to come."
Dead Rising has been heavily criticized for some painful flaws, including punishing survivor AI, poor standard definition video support, and a brutal save system. Still, the game was a big hit when it first launched and continues to attract the attention of 360 owners. I hope to be getting some kind of 1 millionth copy sold prize, being possibly the last person on earth to give the game a try.
Some say that Dead Rising's faults were overlooked, in part, because hit 360 games were in short supply when the title first went to market. It remains to be seen how well another Dead Rising will do with many more games to choose from. Dead Rising, though imperfect, does a lot to depart from the norm in the survival horror or action genres. if Capcom works to fix the game's major problems - instead of pretending they are just intentional game elements - I suspect another million copies won't be hard to unload.
