I wonder if there will ever come a year when Halloween takes a break and we get to relax? It certainly isn’t this year, so that means it’s time to break out the backlog and run through a few new and old games that will give you the chills, or possibly a few fits of laughter. If you are a horror buff, or even if you jump at the slightest scare, there is something in the list to fit all your wildest Halloween dreams. Follow me as I delve into the best (and some of the worst) games to play over the weekend.
9. The Condemned Series: When I think of games that were truly scary or creepy over the past few years, my mind always come back to the first and second Condemned games. Both games followed agent Ethan Thomas as he hunts serial killers through a city plagued by insanity. Criminals are made more vicious and unpredictable by The Hate, and Ethan is forced to use whatever weapons he can grab to find a killer that kills serial killers. Condemned was unique in that it was occurs through a 1st-person perspective, but is heavily oriented in melee combat. Ethan is able to pick up pipes, boards, and the occasional gun to lay out a crazy or two. Each game delivered a sense of fear, as enemies lurked in the shadows, and used scare tactics to get the jump on Ethan. Condemned is a bit disturbing, with its outstanding character design that delivered plenty of jumps on my playthrough of each game. If you are looking for unexpected scares, Condemned would be a good place to start.
9. Onechanbara: Bikini Samurai Squad: Yes, I went there. Onechanbara, is possibly one of the worst titles released on the Xbox 360, but it also happens to be one of the funniest horror games, ever. While scares are non-existent, the game features a team of chesty girls fighting through hordes of zombies in one of the worst plots I’ve ever suffered through. So why in the world does Onechanbara deserve your attention on Halloween? The game is not unlike a Horror B-movie with such drab, uninspired performances by all three leading ladies that it is hysterical. The amount of bloodshed that comes from dicing zombies is absolutely outrageous and I couldn’t love it anymore.
8. Costume Quest: I reviewed Costume Quest early last week, and while it isn’t the strongest game ever it brings back great memories of dressing up and trying to score an ungodly amount of candy. The game is absolutely adorable in design and it is an easy one to play while you get your heart rate back in order after going through some of the heavy hitters. Being a simple, turn-based RPG, Costume Quest delivers joy rather than terror and is couldn’t be more perfect for turning the scariest night of the year into the cutest night of the year.
