Blitz: The League Banned in Australiaby Matt Gibbs
Our friends down under won't be playing Blitz: The League anytime soon, with their classification review authority banning the game over in-game drug use. The Office of Film and Literature Classification refused to classify the game, which means it is unable to be sold legally there. They stated: " In the course of the game, the player may access what are purported to be both legal and illegal performance-enhancing drugs for the members of the team. Choosing to use these drugs (by selecting from a menu) will have both negative and positive effects on team-members, for example, by improving their speed while making them more susceptible to injury. Each drug has different characteristics. Fake urine samples may also be acquired for avoiding positive drug tests. While the game-player can choose not to use the drugs, in the Board’s majority view there is an incentive to use them. By using them judiciously, the player can improve the performance of the football team (while managing the negative effects) and have a better chance of winning games, thereby winning bets and climbing the league table." The piece of legislation that the authority were dealing with states titles that " depict, express or otherwise deal with matters of sex, drug misuse or addiction, crime, cruelty, violence or revolting or abhorrent phenomena in such a way that they offend against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults" must be refused classification. Other games refused classification there include:
- BMX XXX
- Manhunt
- Grand Theft Auto III
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
- Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude
- Postal
- Postal 2
- Narc

i seriously am disgusted w/ goverments and their "banning" for the "common good". It is not the government's job to tell us what we can watch or play. It is the family's job to decide that for themselves.
The only way to change this type of action is to vote!! |

You make some great points. I'm currently playing the game, and I see where they are coming from. I wouldn't advise Blitz: The League for players under 16, but shouldn't adults have the right to buy this game for their own use? |

So they ban videogames there among other places in the world, states here are trying to do the same. At the same time movies with animal sex, kiddy rape, and the assasination of a sitting president, are lauded as art at festivals. Will they ban those too? If I'm "down under" or "across the pond" what will come up on my computer screen if I look up "barnyard orgy" or "Iraq Video"? What will I see on TV? Tell me cuz I really don't know. From my aspect as a parent, and a Christian, I see no reason for any of the banned videogames, or any other media that contains "filth" to be released anywhere, that's the truth. Call me a hyprocrite, but I'm a relatively young person who grew up at the same time as videogames, cable tv, the internet, the PMRC, and numerous other debates along this subject. I have watched porn, play Gears of War, and still enjoy listening to "Stripped, Raped, and Strangled" once or twice a year. It hasn't warped me as far as I know. While I'm going to keep my girls as far away from all of these things for as long as I can, I'll defend the right, in this country at least, to make and distribute a stupid video game. |
