2010 wasn’t exactly the greatest year for movies. For some strange reason, someone thought a follow-up to Sex and the City would be spectacular, and, hey, Hollywood even screwed up Prince of Persia. Nevertheless, there were some diamonds in the rough, so here now are our top ten movies (especially for the gamer crowd) of 2010!
10. 127 Hours - Danny Boyle’s follow-up to the gritty Slumdog Millionaire takes us into a canyon, where an extreme hiker finds himself trapped by a boulder, and in a desperate fight for survival. What could’ve been just another boring movie of the week for television is instead escalated by Boyle’s focus on madness, as well as an over-the-top performance by James Franco that truly pays off. This could be his best role to date, actually – until Your Highness arrives next year.
9. Despicable Me - There were mixed feelings coming from Universal’s CG animated effort, but, hey, when it comes to being despicable, who wouldn’t like the opportunity? Despicable Me is a whole lot of fun, thanks to an army of minions who deserve their own movie, top notch voice actors who are primed for their roles (Steve Carell is terrific as Gru, and Jason Siegel matches him every step of the way as Vector) and beautiful animation – which actually validates the 3-D format for a change. (We’re looking at you, Clash of the Titans.)
8. Kick-Ass - Tired of all the mumbo jumbo surrounding big-budget comic book flicks? Then turn your attention to Kick-Ass, a brutal yet fun Matthew Vaughn flick that never lets up. Packed with great fight sequences, lots of laughs and some great performances (including the young kid who plays Hit Girl, she’s nothing short of awesome), this sets the standard of how comic book films should be. Screw the inflated budget, bring on the fun! Oh, and don’t piss of Hit Girl. Just saying.
7. Black Swan - Darren Aronofsky never ceases to amaze once he gets his true film talents going, as he’s proven in Requiem For a Dream. With Black Swan, he’s even more twisted, focusing on a ballerina dancer who will do nothing but excel, no matter what the cost. The real star of the show here is Natalie Portman, thunderously taking the stage and owning it every second she’s on screen. Here, she reminds us how incredible an actress she really is. Oh, and that love scene with Mila Kunis? Hot. There, we said it.
6. The Social Network - An outstanding drama from director David Fincher, who skips using special effects and instead concentrates on the power of the story, written boldly by Aaron Sorkin. This is truly some of the best work for both parties, as well as Jesse Eisenberg, dynamic in his role of Mark, the would-be billionaire who creates Facebook, while running into legal trouble along the way. This is the kind of movie that really defines our times, whether we like it or not. Don’t miss it.
