Ahhh, Valentine’s Day. You either love it to no end as you spend it with your loved one, or loathe its very creation. No matter which way you lean, however, there’s always room to admire a well-balanced couple in a video game. So, to celebrate Valentine’s Day 2011 in our own special gamer way, we’ve chosen our favorite twosomes on the video game front, no matter how unlikely they seem or if they want to kill each other at first. Let us know if you agree, or if you’ve got your own favorite couple to recommend; with further ado we present the Top 10 Next-Gen Video Game Couples:
10. Marcus and Dom - Gears of War: Finally, we have a “bromance” for the ages, a team that would no doubt be able to clear out dozens of Locust Horde in no time flat – even in Horde Mode. The experiences that Marcus and Dom have haven’t been easy – especially when it comes to marital partners – but it’s been exciting all the same, as they work together to mow down an invading alien force and try to save what’s left of their planet. There’s no question that the third and final chapter to their saga will be the most compelling yet.
9. Monkey and Trip - Enslaved: Okay, romantic they’re not, and the fact that Trip forces Monkey to come along on her journey by means of an explosive-rigged helmet doesn’t help either. But as they proceed on their adventure, Monkey and Trip turn out to be quite a team, between his brute force and her technical know-how. They could be the most unlikely couple to emerge from video games since Toejam and Earl. (And certainly not as ugly.)
8. Rick and the Mask - Splatterhouse: Ok, this relationship DEFINITELY isn’t based on love, but Rick has no choice but to don the mask in Namco’s bloody Splatterhouse game. He’s left for dead, and his girlfriend is kidnapped by a horde of demons. To save them both, he’ll need to put on the smart-ass mask, which transforms him into a hideous, mutated, muscle-bound freak. Their journey is filled with insults and all kinds of sexual repertoire, but theirs is a remarkable team-up that will leave several freaks of nature dead in their tracks. Plus, for the record, Jim Cummings is damn funny as the Mask. We need him to do more voicework in games.
