This morning, the folks at Deep Silver unveiled its latest project via an exclusive trailer over at IGN, the shockingly cool Dead Island. Even though the trailer doesn’t feature any gameplay footage, we were able to get some first details on what to expect from the game, which is being developed by Techland Studios (Nail’d, Call of Juarez games). A word of warning: the trailer is disturbing (and is one of the best trailer’s we have ever seen for a video game – find it embedded below). It basically combines events that are rewinding and moving forward, as a family goes on a dream trip to Papua New Guinea, where they’re staying at the Royal Palms Resort. All hell breaks loose when a zombie infestation takes place, and anyone can be a victim, as the trailer indicates. (In case you can’t piece the facts together, a little girl ends up perishing due to the zombie plague, being thrown out a window and all. Ouch.)
Those of you thinking this will be just another Left 4 Dead clone would be mistaken. Rather than take the usual guns-to-undead approach that other games have, the focus will instead be on survival. Throughout the game, you’ll battle the undead via a first-person perspective, but you’ll do it through the use of melee weapons. And we don’t mean top-of-the-line samurai blades, but rather axes, bats, brooms and whatever else you can get your hands on. It’s also got role-playing elements, as you’ll struggle to keep other people alive while keeping yourself in one piece and powering up through a pre-set skill tree. We’ll have a more in-depth look at Dead Island when we meet up with Deep Silver later this month at GDC. Judging by what we’ve seen from the trailer, it’s got a lot to live up to. If it can make it work, though, we’re in for a spectacular zombie revival – and maybe one of the best games of 2011.
