We don’t know what it is about Deep Silver’s Dead Island trailer that keeps drawing us in (you need to watch it first, to get in the mood, click here). We’ve seen a bazillion zombie products before it (like A & E’s brilliant The Walking Dead series and a number of films), but the way that a family on vacation succumbs to the power of the undead is riveting, unsettling…and really sets the mood for the game that’s coming later this year. With that, we’ve decided to dig our way into the hordes of the undead to bring you our top ten favorite zombie games of all time. Now, some of them are a series, and others are solo games that manage to stand out on their own accord. But all of our choices definitely feature a zombie or two…or two million. Check out our selections, and be sure to share your own in the comment section below. And, for that matter, if you haven’t checked out the Dead Island trailer yet, please do so. Looks amazing.
10. I Made a Game With Zombies In It!!! (Xbox Live) - James Silva, the creator of the Dishwasher franchise, comes back with a vengeance using this simple (yet thoroughly entertaining) top-down shooter, reminiscent of the classic arcade hit Smash TV. You’ll work your way through a stage, shooting at hordes of incoming zombies with a variety of weapons, including bazookas and flamethrowers. The game not only features non-stop action, but one of the best theme songs you’ll ever hear. And it’s just a dollar, ya cheap skate!
9. Call of Duty: Black Ops "Zombies Mode" (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3) - Although Call of Duty: World At War was the first game to introduce the new Zombies mode, Black Ops took it a step further by introducing a presidential angle, one that has you playing as John F. Kennedy, Richard Nixon and others as you try to bring down an incoming zombie horde. There’s lots of strategy here, but also tons of bloody action, and plenty of goodies to unlock. Granted, this’ll never happen in real life, but it sure beats watching historical footage…
8. Stubbs the Zombie (Xbox )- How about we have a game that lets us play a zombie for a change? And not just any zombie, but rather a zombie named Stubbs, who’s just trying to make his way through a troublesome town while chewing on a few brains. This change of perspective is exactly what makes a game like Stubbs work so well, and it’s hilariously stylish to boot. Don’t sweat it if you can’t find the original Xbox version – it’s on Xbox Live for $15.
