In either the worst kind of publicity stunt or an indication that Ubisoft can see the future, a band of heavily armed men approached a group of National Guardsmen at the US-Mexico border in Arizona this week. No laughing matter, the event marks the first time soldiers have faced armed civilians at the border.
Six or eight men, according to reports, brandished automatic rifles and wore ballistic vests as they stumbled on National Guard troops deployed to the border to assist the Border Patrol. The bad guys split into two groups and tried to flank the soldiers before the American forces retreated to alert the Border Patrol. The gunmen fled into Mexico and are believed to be part of a drug or human smuggling gang. Luckily, no one was hurt.
The National Guard is prohibited from firing their weapons while working at the border unless fired upon - a decidedly dangerous scenario to be in.
Yahoo news has a detailed article explaining the event and the local response to the scare. Lawmakers are debating how to change the rules of engagement in the future (and no, it's not as simple as the d-pad). Let us see if anyone tries to blame this on video games.
