Halo Reach: Defiant Map Pack Review

    by Robert Workman

The latest map pack for Halo Reach is out today, and you can bet that thousands (perhaps even millions) of fans of the series are gathering to enjoy the three new layouts that it has to offer. With that, we decided to put these maps to the test to see just how much enjoyment they deliver. And you know what? You Spartans are in for a treat. First off is Highland. This map supports a variety of Halo Reach’s modes, including Capture the Flag, Team Slayer (“SLAYER!”) and a few others. It’s a nice wide-open training facility with plenty of vehicles and weapon spawn points, so you can stay in the fight even if you get fragged in a nasty manner. (And since this is Halo, well, you will.)

This has a great outdoor scenic view, with the cloud-dusted clouds hanging in the distance and plenty of wide-open space to run. We definitely liked this map. The second map, Condemned, takes place in a similar setting to Orbital Station Gamma, where a huge space battle is exploding while you continue the firefight indoors. It’s a great scenic touch, but it can be distracting when you’re trying to target enemies in your crosshairs. The biggest feature to this map is the low gravity room, which features all kinds of crazy physics as you jump around and shoot at everything. (Granted, it also leaves you open to attack when it comes to grounded enemies.)

This map is a must-play for those who love their indoor environments. Finally, there’s the new firefight map, Unearthed. With this, you’ll run across waves of elites while trying to stay in one piece – if you can. The vehicles are a little more random here, but the design of the facility is outstanding, and gives you plenty of space to work your magic against the invading baddies. Give it a go with your friends. Overall, all of these maps have something to offer, making the 800 Microsoft Point ($10) purchase well worth it. Make a buy, and we’ll see you online to finish the fight.

    Final Recommendation: Buy
