After months of false rumors and supposed deals, Deep Silver officially announced today, April 1, 2011 that Uwe Boll, Oscar award-winning director of such video game films as Bloodrayne, Postal, and Far Cry, has acquired the film rights to Dead Island. The game, slated for early next this year, puts people on a tropical resort, overrun by the undead and leaving them in a state of survival from zombies.
"It's such a horrid tale, I knew it would be perfect for a film," said Boll in a released statement. "I want to approach it with the same kind of vigor and grace that I did Bloodrayne 2. In fact, we're already looking into some key casting choices. We're digging up Tony Randall's grave to have him play one of the air traffic controllers, and we're heavy into negotiations with Joe Pesci to make his big- screen comeback as one of the natives. We're thrilled at the moment. Might even get Ben Kingsley again if he'd answer my calls!" "This is such a huge deal for Deep Silver," said Aubrey Crazyone, lead PR for the company. "I mean, we could've easily handed our film rights to Martin Scorsese or Kevin Smith or even the guy who created Friends, but after a great deal of negotiation and a few bottles of whiskey, we felt Uwe Boll would be the right choice, especially for an April 1st release date."
Uwe said the film would be part horror, part musical as people fight their way off the island, in hopes of reaching the boat on the other side -- which would be driven by Gavin McLeod, one of the stars from the TV series The Love Boat. "He's a perfect fit!" said Boll. "He looks dead anyway." Dead Island: The Movie is slated for a non-release into absolutely no theaters on April 1, 2012.
