The iPad has proven to be an interesting proposition as far as video games and technology are concerned, acting as a crossroad of sorts for the future of games, how we control them and the feedback they provide to us as players. On one hand, there are those who would happily see the result of their actions on-screen without so much as a controller rumble while there are others who simply can’t live without this fruit of their digital labors. Nevertheless, with the introduction of the iPad2 and the already ridiculous worldwide sales, it seems that touch, and to an alternate degree, motion games are here to stay. Thus, here are ten games you can find on the iPad right now that would be perfectly at home on your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3.
10. Qrank: In the same vein of 1 vs. 100, Qrank is beyond a doubt the trivia game anyone with an iPad, iPhone or any other iTouch device should be playing. Not only is it addictive in that the questions and various power-ups renew every 24 hours, but there is the consistent competition of being ranked against friends and subsequently at the local, state, national and global levels – so you always know where you stand against every single other Qrank player the world over. The premise is simply; every day, or twenty-four hours depending on when you play, you get 20 questions and are able to select 15 out of them. The faster you answer correctly, the more points you get – get the high score and you nab yourself bragging rights for the day in addition to an award or two. For all the great qualities of this game that inherently make it a potential must-have Xbox Live Arcade title, I can’t fathom why it hasn’t happened yet.
9. Airport Mania: Feel comfortable handling a massive amount of chaos? Does spinning more plates than you have fingers and toes combined sound like a peachy Friday night for you? Then boy, do I have a game for you. Airport Mania is about as cartoony as the stress of operating an airport can get. Planes of various colors circle your runways before being designated where to land, drop of their passengers, refuel or repair before taking off for their next destination and making sure it all happens in smooth concert is up to you. Overlook a detail or ignore a particular plane for too long and they fly off angrily in search of a more accommodating airport. Despite the chaotic gameplay and inherent silliness therein, since the planes do have faces on them to indicate their respective moods, Airport Mania has a respectfully addictive quality to it that can keep even the most frustrated players coming back for more – no matter how many times they’ve been overwhelmed to the point of falling asleep at the controls.
8. Glow Hockey: For those out there who remember the Wii Play mini-game collection that arrived bundled with a second Wiimote a few months in the wake of the console release several years ago, Glow Hockey will feel all too appropriate a homage. Yet on the iPad and subsequently the Xbox 360 Kinect, it feels like an air hockey game that should be played with the lights off to fully appreciate the rave-like colors and furiously quick gameplay requiring red bull granted reflexes. While the controls can feel a bit lagged occasionally, allowing for an easy shot on the part of an opponent, Glow Hockey nevertheless has the potential to be a hit title on the 360.
