Microsoft has issued a “service alert” status for the matchmaking portion of Xbox Live. The account, Xbox Live, and Xbox Live Marketplace features are all marked as “up and running,” but the matchmaking is said to be experiencing problems. Microsoft’s complete statement is as follows:
Users may experience difficulties with the following services:
- Users may receive potential phishing attempts via title specific messaging while playing Modern Warfare 2.
We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience”
There are a few points worth mentioning. First, the statement specifically points to Modern Warfare 2 as a root of this concern. Secondly, the term “phishing” is a way for hackers to lure people into giving away personal information. And third, it is worth noting that this has occurred only a week after the Playstation Network was shut down by an “external intrusion,” though no connection has been made. We have contacted Microsoft, Infinity Ward and Activision, and are awaiting their responses.
