    Bizarre Creations Updates the Club

    by Matt Gibbs

Bizarre Creations have run a mini-update on their progress in developing The Club, a new third person shooter title currently scheduled for release some time this year.

The update mainly focuses on how they are developing the game from a practical stand point - how the teams work together, where, and so forth. They also go into a bit of the character creation process, and how certain models are created. If this isn't your bag, then never fear, because apparently next week we will learn about the gameplay and get some in-game screenshots!

Then we moved onto Charlie Birtwistle (Graphics Coder), who gave an in-engine demo of his shared tech particle system. The demo itself involved a bunch of flying cubes, with various effects added to them like flames and smoke. The system is super-fast, platform-independent, and completely artist-driven... meaning that no programming is required to make special effects. An artist can sit down and make an explosion look exactly like he/she wants it to, without fiddling around with C++. We use this particle system for hundreds of things in The Club; everything from weather effects to bullet ricochets to muzzle flashes.
