Forecast: Xbox 360 Releases for the Week of June 5, 2011

    by Robert Workman

As swamped as we’ll all probably be with E3 news, believe it or not, there are actually games coming this week. Yeah! I know, right? Just when we think that this week would be free and clear for big-ass announcements, three developers surprise us with big game releases. So let’s get into the Forecast and see what’s coming our way; stay tuned right here to PlanetXbox360.com for detailed reviews of each and every of the retail releases listed below in the next coming weeks (RFA has already been posted, access it by clicking here).

Green Lantern: Rise of the Manhunters (WB Games): Who says Ryan Reynolds gets to have all the fun of being a superhero? In Green Lantern’s video game debut (well, his solo one, anyhow – we’ll forget about the crappy Justice League fighting game on the SNES), you control our greenie hero as he battles evil forces across Oa and several other planets, using the power of the ring. Reynolds actually supplied his voice and likeness for the game, so there’s definitely film presence here, but this adventure actually features some good action, between third-person God of War-ish action sequences and 3-D flying segments. We’ll review this one upon our return…and see if we can remember that damn oath.

Operation Flashpoint: Red River (Codemasters): The original Operation Flashpoint wasn’t exactly for everyone, as it focused more on realistic combat rather than over-the-top scenarios like a given Modern Warfare series. That said, fans of that game will no doubt flock to Red River, which features a bunch of new campaign missions, as well as the option to team up with friends in co-op multiplayer. If you’re up for a challenge from your first person shooters or want something that’ll really make you grit your teeth in combat, sign up for this Operation. We’ll review this one next week, too.

Red Faction: Armageddon (THQ): Last but definitely not least, we have THQ’s epic sequel to the award-winning 2009 hit Red Faction: Guerrilla, which takes an entirely different approach and pits you against an alien army, both through enclosed caves and outdoor environments. True, the lack of open-world structure kind of hurts the game slightly, but the action more than makes up for it, especially the first time you unleash hell with a magnet gun. Seriously, give this thing a try, you may be tempted to stick with it throughout the adventure. Read our full review for the verdict, then get your hands on this sucker come Tuesday. We’ll see you in Infestation Mode. TRY to stay alive, will ya?
