Another summer season is upon us and you know what that means, E3 is coming! Yes, this year’s E3 convention is expected to be a landmark event, detailing one confirmed new system and possibly even more. Along with new consoles are numerous AAA titles like Mass Effect 3, Gears of War 3, Assassin’s Creed: Revelation, and Hitman: Absolution. With last year’s emphasis on motion capture technology, what new innovation will be brought to the table at his year’s three daylong event? Personally, I, Ryan, have a feeling that this year will be groundbreaking concerning the technological advancement of video games. Hold on to your Kinect motion captured seatbelts because here is my wishlist for E3 2011.
10. New Microsoft Console: When Nintendo announced that their new system would be making an appearance at this year’s E3, I thought to myself, “Wow, what are they thinking?” Analysts have stated in the past that this generation of gaming has a good couple of years left, so introducing a new system doesn’t seem like the most appropriate idea. However, when all the rumors started to circulate about EA obtaining the technology for Microsoft’s next system, I was intrigued. Though the rumor was indeed false, I would still like to see some sort of announcement concerning the new system. Of course, I would not want to see Microsoft release it next year or anything, but some kind of indication would generate much anticipation from fans.
9. More Xbox Live Additions: So far this year, Microsoft has added Hulu Plus to Xbox Live and last year at E3, Microsoft announced Twitter, Facebook, and ESPN to the online gaming network. With all the numerous applications being added to Xbox Live, what is in store for the network’s future? My prediction relates to applications that would be primarily e-commerce based like Amazon or Ebay. It’s interesting to see how much Xbox Live has grown in terms of both gaming and as a digital media delivery service. Come June, I am hoping to see what new additions will be added to Xbox Live.
8. E3 Geared Towards Hardcore/Traditional Gamer, Less on Casual: If you’re visiting PlanetXbox360, I take it that you do not fall under the casual gamer category. After the release of the Nintendo Wii, I noticed that many E3 keynote address and presentations have been aimed at casual gaming. Gamers who follow E3 updates hours a day during the convention do not really care about High School Music 7 or some generic exercise title. E3 should more so be a focus on those who have a passion for video games and are familiar with the industry itself. Obliviously, developers need to reach that casual gamer market, but there are other ways to do this. I’m hoping that E3 sticks to being for the gamers, not so much as a ground to make money off poorly designed gamers aimed toward the tween audience.
