All sorts of rumors have been flying around the web over the past couple of weeks hinting that a successor to the Xbox 360 isn't far away. While we here at PlanetXbox360 are with the majority of gamers in feeling that the current tech is just fine for another couple of years, there are a number of realities that make a good case for Microsoft to launch the 720 as early as next year. Believe us, we're right there with you, shelling out another $400+ to play the latest and greatest isn't the most favorable option - heck, we'll have to change the name of our site! - but the reality is that it's in Microsoft's best interest to move forward with their next console.
Why is it so imperative that the next Xbox launch in 2012? Well, there are five glaring truths that can't be ignored. Here they are:
5. New Disc Format - Let's face it, the 360 is running on antiquated hardware. The DVD drive is so last generation it isn't even funny. Microsoft's console gets ragged on for having multiple discs for many of its larger games, so by launching a new console with a more advanced drive Microsoft can take advantage of the bigger storage capacity on each disc. If you ask me, swapping discs isn't that big of a deal, but it'd be nice for Microsoft to finally squash the ramblings of PlayStation fanboys with Blu-ray support.
4. Halo 4 as a Launch Title - One of the biggest issues with many console launches is a weak launch lineup. If Microsoft wants to make a big splash in the industry and generate a bunch of hype for their new console, they'll announce that their biggest exclusive franchise will be launching with the new console. Let's not forget that Halo CE launched alongside the original Xbox, making quite the compelling package for consumers. Not only will this be a way to sell a large number of units right out of the gate, it will also assuage gamers' hesitation to jump on board with a non-Bungie Halo game. Think about it, if gamers want to experience the new Halo trilogy, they'll only be able to do so on Microsoft's Xbox 720. If that's the case, I'm sold.
3. Timing isn't Abnormal - Let's not forget that the original Xbox launched at the end of 2001, with its successor releasing only four years later at the end of 2005. The 360 has already been around for nearly six years, and while Microsoft claims that there are still many years left in the console's life, it wouldn't surprise me if they pull a PS2 and continue to support it with third party titles while its successor is on the market.
2. Showing its Age - With the WiiU launching sometime next year, it's likely that the Xbox 360 will technically be the most underpowered console. If they launch their next console alongside the WiiU, they'll be able to steal a lot of Nintendo's momentum and reclaim their position as having the most powerful console on the market. Those concerned about Kinect support need not worry either. All Microsoft needs to do is make the system compatible with the hardware and they'll have their bases covered. It will be very easy for them to move the peripheral over to a new console.
1. Beat Sony to the Punch - It worked for them with the Xbox 360, so why wouldn't they go for the same strategy again. They've already got a loyal fan base that is invested in the Xbox Live service. The fact that the 360 was out before the PS3 made it the online platform of choice because they had already formed a solid online community before the PlayStation Network was even released. Much of their success can be attributed by the console's early release. It's only natural for them to stick with that strategy again.
