This generation of video games has seen many titles come and pass that needed extra time in development. Many factors have caused titles being rushed onto store shelves, but none of them are valid enough when looking back and seeing the disappointing results for many titles that often lead to unemployment for several developers.
10. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II:
Once upon a time, LucasArts had the gaming industry in a whirlwind when it announced the original Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. The impressive physics and bridge between Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope was more than enough to excite starving fanatics looking for any kind of lightsaber action.
Instead of a high quality product, what gamers were served was a title that came off as a middle-of-the-pack action game that fell prey to brevity. Sadly, the development team didn’t learn from their mistakes and offered up a sequel that delivered the same results: sub-par jedi vs. sith action.
Why it needed to be delayed: Nonsensical storyline and poor level design needed to be addressed.
9. TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled: Nostalgia gets the best of us, case in point: TMNT: Turtles in Time Re-Shelled. A classic beat ‘em up that was released during the peak of genre in 1992. Fast forward 17 years later and Ubisoft Singapore opted to provide an enhanced remake of the title, yet forgot to keep the heart and soul of the package in tact. Even with the new visuals and online cooperative play, the development team decided to ditch the soundtrack and not include an option to play with the old graphics. As anyone could easily guess, there was an outcry by fans and the critical reception wasn’t favorable.
Why it needed to be delayed: Ubisoft needed to include the old soundtrack and graphics as an option.
8. Splatterhouse: Delayed several times prior to release, Splatterhouse needed at least another 2-3 months of refinement to rid itself of clipping and framerate issues. While the humor and over the top gameplay did present a noteworthy rental for many gamers, the technical issues held Splatterhouse back from being anything more than a mediocre title.
Why it needed to be delayed: Plagued by too many technical issues such as clipping, framerate, and long loading times.
