A 1,500 page manifesto allegedly written by Oslo terrorist Anders Behring Breivik was found last week. The lengthy document credits both Modern Warfare 2 and World of Warcraft as aides in his massacre. In it, he explains how World of Warcraft gave him a believable cover, allowing him to plan the attack. He also hails Modern Warfare 2 as being a prominent part in training him for the event.
"I just bought Modern Warfare 2, the game. It is probably the best military simulator out there and it's one of the hottest games this year. ... I see MW2 more as a part of my training-simulation than anything else. I've still learned to love it though and especially the multiplayer part is amazing. You can more or less completely simulate actual operations."
While the authorities have yet to confirm that Breivik actually is the author, references to his personal information within the manifesto are accurate. The tragic event in which a bomb killed seven and 85 others were gunned down occurred on Friday at a youth camp.
When Kotaku contacted Activision for a comment, a spokesman replied, "We are shocked and saddened by the tragedy in Norway and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. We do not believe that this senseless tragedy is in any way connected to any form of media or entertainment."
We can't imagine anyone other than an insane person could actually blame this type of horrific act on video game entertainment but that argument is for another time. Our hearts go out to the any and all the individuals who have been affected by this tragedy.
