Considering this game is based around the rap industry one would expect the audio portion to be well above par. After playing for more than a few hours on my 5.1 surround sound system with the bass cranked up I have to say that EA did a great job in the audio department. My wife complained more than a few times about the loud bass keeping her awake at night so I know the game did it’s job. The musical score included all the rapper’s best songs and the Xbox 360 version allows you to import your own custom soundtrack.
Because of the new “beat” system this can make for some pretty unique fights and if you memorize the bass tracks correctly it will give you a huge advantage over your opponent in any fight. Overall Def Jam: Icon is a welcome addition to the fighting genre on my Xbox 360 as well as a great introduction to the series on the next-generation platform. While the “DJ beat” system is not all it was cracked up to be, the deep story mode, destructible environments, and kick-ass soundtrack polish out the game quite well. If you are a fan of the series this game is a must own but for general gamers or fighting genre fanatics it is also a game that should be investigated. I came away not 100% satisfied but quite happy with my purchase; I am looking forward to the next game in the series and how EA can improve upon the Def Jam franchise, Icon is definitely a step in the right direction.
