Call of Duty XP (to celebrate the upcoming release of Modern Warfare 3 maybe) has come and gone, and for a first time event focusing on a big game franchise, Activision really hit this one out of the park. The company spared no expense in making sure its attendees had a swell time doing a number of things, mainly playing Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer but also taking part in other activities (lots of physical activities). With that out of the way, we’ve summed up the ten most memorable moments during our Call of Duty XP experience in one handy article, letting you know what items stuck out the most for us. A couple negatives was most of the non-gaming fun was outside, wehere it was hot, food and drink was expensive, lots of smelly gamers, and the lines (OMG don't get me started on the lines - Jeep, Zipline, Paintball, Spec-Ops, etc), lastly Activision runs a great event but the security team was downright horrible and knew nothing - even with all that bad XP was freaking amazing so let's tell you about it. So, without further ado…here are our ten greatest moments that made Call of Duty XP one of the most-enjoyable gaming expos in recent history, and it was open to the public, and every single cent they made went to a military charity, and they made a lot.
The Jeep Experience: It would’ve been enough to relive the exciting combat that Modern Warfare 3’s multiplayer provided, but Jeep went the extra mile. The car manufacturer, partnering with Activision on a special limited edition Modern Warfare 3 vehicle, actually recreated a military scenario for attendees. They climb into Jeeps, ride through entrenched waters and dangerous obstacles, and eventually come face to face with a real-time combat situation, performed by actual Navy SEALs. Sure, it was a little loud, and we didn’t really get to go over any big jumps, but we did get to see everything the Jeep could do (like climb REALLY steep hills) and check out some very convincing action. This was easily one of the best moments at the show.
The Mountain Dew XP Facepaint booth: Mountain Dew proved to be a pivotal partner in Call of Duty XP, not only providing limited edition cans of its soda (which will be on sale this October along with a new flavor specifically made for Modern Warfare 3) but also a face paint booth where attendees could get painted up like their favorite soldiers. We went with a “dirty” combat look for our face paint job, which definitely got some good responses out of the ladies at the after party. (It’s not often you get to hit on them while wearing that stuff.) For that matter, they also brought the lovely Carrie Keagan, who was a delight to hang out with at the event.
Burger Town – and its food/dude: It isn’t enough that Activision managed to recreate Burger Town from its Modern Warfare 2 game – complete with modestly good (if not a bit overpriced) food and some cool items if you mentioned the “secret sauce” – but it also brought another guy along for the ride. The actor who appears in the Modern Warfare 2 commercial in Burger Time duds (the one that was dual wielding Uzis at the end) made an appearance, handing out stickers and patches to lucky attendees and happily posing for pictures. Our only hope is that this guy returns in some capacity for a Modern Warfare 3 ad. He was awesome.
