The NPD has released their sales data for the month of August 2011, and the data shows a 23% decrease in revenue from one year before in August 2010. Hardware sales are down 12% from last year, while software sales have slipped an even greater 34% from last year.
The Xbox 360 was the best selling console in August 2011, for the seventh month in a row, selling 308,000 consoles. NPD analyst Anita Frazier attributes poor software sales to “the shift of the annual Madden release from August to September.” Madden 12 has already shipped 1.4 million copies, but this does not include the sure to be massive September 2011 sales figures. Another game that comes out in September, Gears of War 3, oh ya that little title - FIFA 12 does as well; along with a slew of other big name games.
The September NPD report will be the complete opposite of this one, bar for hardware sales because honestly, who doesn’t already have a console. Check out the full top 10 list of video game software sold in August 2011, (without number of actual sold copies) below. We’re so happy to see that Deus Ex: Human Revolution is sitting atop the list because for one it was epic and for two it’s in the running for our top title of the year, and lastly the fact that it sold well means we’ll probably get a sequel.
