Epic Games’ Gears of War 3 sold over 3 million copies this week, but apparently that wasn’t enough to give the game the top spot in terms of Xbox Live activity. Major Nelson is reporting that the top-played game (based on number of users) for the week of September 19th goes to Call of Duty: Black Ops. Gears 3 took 2nd place, ahead of fellow shooters Modern Warfare 2 and Halo: Reach.
While it may surprise some of you that Gears 3 couldn’t dethrone the Black Ops machine during it’s first week, think about this. Call of Duty: Black Ops has been at the #1 spot since the game’s release back in November 2010. Black Ops has 10 months worth of consumers, while Gears 3 only had 6 days worth of consumers. Not to mention that Black Ops has been able to maintain their popularity by releasing a constant flow of successful DLC. Maybe Gears 3 will be able to pick up the slack as time goes on.
I was beating all 50 waves of Horde this week. What games were you playing?
