While I may not be able to name even a handful of quality movies that were inspired by video game franchises, that doesn't mean that there isn't hope for a decent tie-in. Some of today's gaming franchise have really fleshed out universes and compelling characters that could be used to create some pretty awesome flicks. Here are ten that we believe deserve the silver screen treatment.
10. inFamous - Sucker Punch's latest open-world platforming franchise has become one of Sony's most precious exclusives. With a dark and detailed atmosphere overwrought with corruption and despair, Empire City would be a fantastic locale to tell a story. Plus, seeing Cole scale buildings and glide along electric wires would be awesome. With the success of films like Spider-Man and The Dark Knight, it's clear that there is a desire for superhero based films and inFamous would certainly fit the bill.
9. Metroid - This series may be Nintendo's most cinema worthy franchise. Samus Aran is such a unique character, and as a powerful female leader, she could serve as a role model for women. After seeing the series' haunting space environments in first person via Metroid Prime, the rich universe of Metroid is just dying to be explored. Imagine watching Samus go toe-to-toe with Ridley in glorious 3D on a massive IMAX screen. Pretty awesome, right?
8. Metal Gear - The story surrounding Solid Snake may be a bit convoluted and over the top, but if Kojima has proven anything to us, it's that this series can pull on our heartstrings in away that other gaming franchises fail to do. There's a huge cast of characters here to draw from and a multitude of locales and time frames. Heck, Kojima could probably direct the thing himself. Let's just hope Snake doesn't look like that goofy old man in the most recent PlayStation 3 commercial.
7. Homefront - What if the United States was invaded? This is the basic premise of Homefront, a game that may not be the best in its class, but one that tells an interesting story. While the film doesn't necessarily have to be based directly on the game, I'm sure some talented director could tell a pretty awesome story about the hypothetical downfall of the United States. History buffs and action fans alike would eat this one up.
6. Resistance - The Sony exclusive first person shooter franchise may have initially been an attempt to compete with Halo, but as time has gone on the Resistance franchise has become something very different. Resistance 3 tells a very bleak and dark story that chronicles the lonely and hopeless tale of a single resistance fighter. The odds are stacked against him and his mission may be suicidal, but when only 10% of the world's population remains, there isn't much of an option. If the most recently installment in the franchise can capture the sense of helplessness that comes from an alien invasion, image what a film could do.
