In a new developer diary for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Marty Stoltz, the cinematic director for Big Huge Games, discusses the use of cinematics in video games.
The most important statement Stoltz makes is “We’re not making movies, we’re making games. So the movies have to support the game.” Stoltz talks about how the cinematics must engage the player to a point where they do not realize they’re watching a cinematic and will be able to jump into playing as soon as the cinematic is finished. If you watch the video, you will also see a hefty amount of gameplay footage.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning comes out on February 7th, 2012 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
