Well, another year, another Video Game Awards show from Spike TV. The network aired the two hour special last night, chock full of celebrities, gaming awards (more of the former than the latter) and several big exclusives. Zachary Levi hosted the show this year, and was surprisingly more effective than last year’s hosting gig by Neil Patrick Harris, thanks to his entry through a Portal and some comical bits that actually weren’t half bad. Even if we’re still trying to figure out who the hell the Black Baron is… Anyway, without further ado, we present our top ten favorite moments from last night’s VGA show. As expected, most of them have to do with big game reveals, but don’t let that stop you from reading them - did we miss anything? If so sound off in the comments section.
10. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron gets drama-like: It’s true, there was no gameplay footage. And in a way, Activision did kind of set out to make this trailer seem like a Gears of War montage, but with giant hulking robots. That said, our interest in the upcoming Transformers: Fall of Cybertron has definitely hit a new high, thanks to the inclusion of a bad-ass looking Grimlock (gone is that clumsy sounding robot from the 80’s cartoon) and plenty of detail going into the war-torn automated planet. We’re interested in seeing how this shapes up in the second half of 2012.
9. Celebs…and plenty of Felicia Day: Last year, it was kind of odd that Felicia Day, star of The Guild and the recent Dragon Age web series, got snubbed at the VGA’s, not even being able to get a quality seat. But Spike made it right for her this year, not only giving her the spotlight for a presentation (in a red dress, no less), but also giving her the chance to play Spider-Man, do some Fruit Ninja stuff and eat several cream puffs, giving the Internet plenty of room for inappropriate jokes. For that matter, several other celebs stopped by, including Charlie Sheen (hey, it beats Denise Richards), Hulk Hogan (?) and, for some reason, a clumsy Will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas. At least Zachary Levi kept things somewhat grounded, without celebs getting too lost in the gaming moment. Though someone should remind him, it’s Arkham CITY, not Asylum.
8. Epic Games takes in a Fortnite: Epic Games, the developers behind the gutsy Gears of War trilogy and Unreal Tournament, decided to go with something completely different for its next project, which Cliffy B. announced on the VGA’s. And that project is Fortnite, a game that looks like it combines the building aspect of Minecraft with the zombie battling skills of Plants vs. Zombies. While it would’ve been cool to see some gameplay footage, to get an idea of what the game is about, we certainly can’t wait to see what the team does with it. Even if it does seem like zombie overkill. But hey, everyone hates zombies, right?
