An external party infiltrated the Square Enix member services, compromising the personal information of over 1.8 million users. The Japanese publishing giant has stated, “We are yet to learn whether illegal access was gained to our clients' information. But we have asked our customers to be aware of the incident in case they receive suspicious messages using our name.”
The hacking has the chance to compromise 1,000,000 Japanese members and 800,000 North American members' accounts. There is a very slight silver lining to this hacking, though. While users’ personal information may have been compromised, no financial information could have been obtained. The hacked server did not contain any credit card or billing information, so at least members will not have to worry about that.
European members don’t have to worry at all, because their dedicated servers were not affected.
