Xbox 360 Limiting GTA IV Development?

by Matt Gibbs

Rockstar Games have told the Official Playstation Magazine that the lack of a guaranteed hard drive in the Xbox 360 is creating limitations in the development of Grand Theft Auto IV. Note that the comments are being taken from a magazine that reports on the 360's arch nemesis - the PS3 - however that probably doesn't mean much, they make sense and what's more the PS3 is not without its own share of challenges.

Dan Houser, who is Rockstar's creative VP, was asked, "On PS3 you've got a guarantee that every machine is going to have a hard-drive and, with Blu-ray, you've got plenty of storage, whereas on Xbox 360 there's no guarantee of a hard-drive and you're working with the DVD format. Does that create limitations?" He replied, "Yep".

Houser continued and said that the limitations aren't just confined to the Xbox 360 version, saying, "both have enormous challenges" and "both have their own particular pleasures and pains".

It's also interesting to note that all the footage we have seen from the game thus far is from the Xbox 360 version - who says it's hampering development and the PS3 isn't?

I said this from day 1, and so did Gabe Newell (The Genius behind the Half Life Franchise). No hard drive is ridiculous. Gabe said it himself....why oh why would you build a next gen console, and NOT include a harddrive as standard equipment. If there was a standard harddrive, the 360 would be the perfect system for both programmers and gamers alike. Swap files, caching, etc. it enables programmers much more freedom and room to unlock the true power of the console. Dumb move M$....but I still lub my 360!!

It's like saying: "Was games development cramped on the PS1 & 2 vs the original Xbox as there was no 'guarantee' that all people had bought a memory card to save their games? Really, if Rockstar really wanted to stick to their guns, they should make the game as required, if it NEEDS a HDD drive, then fine. The people that own 360s without HDDs are not likely to be core gamers and quite likely not interested in the game to start with.

Did you ever, did you ever felt like this, strange things are happening going around the twist! PS3 rules!!!

The benefit of having a HDD for console gaming is using it for caching. Games for the 360 already do this. It can be done for GTAIV, no worries. The problem is not for gamers, it's for the developers. They not only have to code for HDD caching, but they also have to code an option for the game to play without caching to HDD. The gamers won't suffer at all (unless you don't have a HDD). If you don't, the gameplay will be reduced some, ie. longer load times and more of them. If you do have a HDD, it will be fine. You could go anywhere seamlessly in Crackdown, even in co-op with one player in a different city section than another. The game area was large. No problems. This is simply a case of pathetic fanboys trying to boost their insecurities. He actually says there are ups and down for both systems. What about the RAM limitations on the PS3, the slow read times of its optical drive, or its subpar GPU compared to the 360's?

that was a bullshit question that the guy got asked. Totally loaded. Howabout "do you think the lack of interest in the PS3 is gonna hamper your sales and how much u care about making ps3 games?" "yep" would be his answer too. 98% of people who bought a core system have gotten a hard drive. its a non issue.. who the fuck is gonna make a game to that 2% of users, when the other98% have a hard drive??? get a spine.

Endur, this is a problem that was coming one way or the other. As the games get bigger and better looking, more memory is required, and without a HDD there's gonna be a point where it becomes very limiting, especially with the competition having it built it. That's why I said before to forget about the problem, because otherwise you're crippled in the long run.

I wanna here Rockstar Games tell this to OXM,(Official Xbox Magazine). Common people, remember the phrase, "Don't believe EVERYTHING you read", especially when this is coming from the people who work for the Official Playstation Magazine. Frack those haters, they're drawing straws in a loosing battle. Viva 360!!!

get rid of the core who the fuck plays 360 without saving their games? If you have a 360 and no HDD go back to PS2 even the xbox had a HDD.

This could get very serious. It's basically saying the XBOX 360 has more potential for better games if it had hard drive required system. Not just for GTA but for many other games. What about Halo 3? I really wish this wasn't an issue.

yes im with you mate. most dudes i know who bought core systems ended up bying a hard disk anyway. but if buying a hdd is a problem for some then whats wrong with making gta4 detect the hdd and if its there use it. or bring out two versions 1 on a single dvd that use the hdd for streaming and one version with two or more dvds thats the game streams from and when promt the user insert the which ever disk is needed, i mean it has worked for other systems why not 360?.

Then assume they have the HDD, simple. Forget the limitations, make core customers buy the hard drive and make the best game you can. Don't let the cheapasses ruin it for everyone.
