Fans of Tim Schafer’s cult-classic Psychonauts have been clamouring for a while about a possible sequel. Schafer had admitted that he would love to make this a reality, going as far as pitching it to various publishers, but to no avail. “I would love to do Psychonauts 2, I've actually pitched that to publishers several times and no-one has taken the bait so far,” Schafer explains. "It is hard because fans often don't know how the business works, with the difference between a developer and a publisher, it's hard to explain that.”
“I'd love to do that game, but I'd have to convince someone to just give me a few million dollars. That's all,” Schafer says downplaying the reality that this might be a difficult task. Or maybe not.
Upon hearing the Tim Schafer had been shopping Psychonauts 2 around without any success, Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson has tweeted at Schafer, writing, “@TimOfLegend Let’s make Psychonauts 2 happen.” Tim Schafer has yet to reply, but his business partner, Steven Dengler, who is a financier of Double Fine Productions (Tim Schafer’s development company) responded, “I’m in.” Shortly afterwards Dengler tweeted, “Let’s move this discussion offline.”
Could Tim Schafer and Notch, two of the brightest stars in game development, be teaming up for Psychonauts 2? It looks like it is a possibility. Notch is an indie game developer interested in creating and releasing games in a new way, while Tim Schafer is a developer that has no problem going against the grain. Sounds like a match made in Heaven. PlanetXbox360 will keep this story updated as it develops.
