Halo 3 Beta Impressionsby Jacob Corbin
Plasma PistolThe tracking ability of the Plasma Pistol’s overcharge shot was something that made this useful, in some respects, in Halo 2. This time around the tracking seems to have diminished somewhat. Thankfully that is fixed by making the overcharge shot disable vehicles. There is nothing better than stopping a Warthog, heading straight for you, dead in its tracks. Plasma RifleNo real changes here as well. Sure, it’s great to look at (Halo 3 is just soo pretty that the weapons make me drool and sit there in awe), but it’s nothing special. Dual wield if you care to, but again, there is better choices available. NeedlerThis actually has had a significant change. First, you cannot dual wield with the needler anymore (or at least in the beta). Second, it is much more powerful this time around, most likely due to the aforementioned reason. I had some quick, easy kills with this nifty gun. Some may say it is overpowered and causes an imbalance in Halo 3 weaponry, but I’m fine with it. That may be due to me being such a crappy player and getting rise out of an easy Needler kill. Decide for yourselves I say. CarbineThe Covenant’s Battle Rifle looks identical to the Halo 2 version. Its ability to zoom and a decent rate of fire make this good for large, open maps as well. This is a dangerous weapon for those with headshot skills. I like it, even if it hasn’t changed. Beam RifleAgain we have another Covenant weapon equivalent to a human one. It is similar in theory and play when compared to the Sniper Rifle but it really isn’t as good as the Sniper Rifle. Its ability to overheat isn’t very fun either. I never use this rifle, ever. It’s weird, ugly, and just plain makes me angry.
SpikerNow here we have a brand new weapon. It’s a cool looking thing with the blades on the bottom of the muzzle and it has a speedy rate of fire. Then again, it is not very powerful so stray away from grabbing this without dual-wielding. I’m not sure how I feel about this addition yet so more use is required to gather my final opinion. Brute ShotRemember that huge rifle the marines had mounted to them in the movie Aliens? That is what the Brute Shot reminds me of. Sure it doesn’t fire lasers but it’s carried similarly. Now the Brute Shot isn’t loved by many regardless of the fact it fires out small grenades (6 total in each clip). The rate of fire seems to have increased so that is good and it’s quite effective in blasting into oblivion a Mongoose passing by. Still, getting a kill out of this gun is going to take a good 4 or 5 blasts. It does cause quite a bit of chaos and pandemonium with its accelerated rate of fire, so it’s not like it’s worthless. In short, I like it enough and use it on occasion. Chain Gun TurretBungie got smart and finally gave users the ability to detach the chain gun and let us have fun on the go. Using this will put you in a third person view. Also you are much slower when using it, but the chain gun does have its benefits. Feeling like Jesse Ventura in Predator? Me too, and I like. Missile PodThis thing is tasty. It’s a massive weapon and just like the Chain Gun Turret, using it will put you in the third person perspective and slow down your pace. It’s VERY powerful (more than the Rocket Launcher I believe) and carries 8 missiles. It homes in on vehicles and is dangerous. If you notice an opponent using one of these, just run.

My coworker has a friend playing the beta and he was able to make a custom match??? They used the sword and the pistol (which sucked). whichever team was down by one point could move twice as fast also. Has anyone else been able to make a custom match? |

Nice article but the right word to describe halo 3 beta is 'empty'. yes i know its only the beta version and hopefully many things will change in the full game but i am having second thoughts. even though this is beta i don't think the graphics will improve much in the full version but i waiting to be proved wrong. during the first week of playing beta i didn't like it much but i have to admit that its growing on me. yet it still feels empty like something major is missing. i am not a game designer so i will hold my unprofessional criticism but i am hoping and praying every day that the full version is at least 50 times better then beta. |

Thanks for the comment, Beowu1f! Bungie does a great job of balancing things out. The multiplayer is just so fluid and fun. When playing and trying to find faults in the game, it really isnt easy, gameplay-wise. |

I like how you (Jacob Corbin) convey an almost giddy feeling when describing your BETA experience. I agree, the gameplay is so balanced and smooth that it, as merely a BETA, is better than nearly every full retail online game I've ever played. Every single major addition that is revealed in the BETA is a step forward, IMO. While I wasn't personally floored by the visual quality, the gameplay is completely unrivaled. Other shooters should take lessons from Bungie on how to properly balance weapons, vehicles, level layout, etc. etc. |

the shotty is shotty at best. I emptied 2 shells into a foe's facemask at point blank range and he still was able to kill me.. 5 minutes later, same guy shoots me in the face once w/ full shields and i go down like a french hooker. Its happend a few times. |

Bullshit the Shotty is more powerful. Just ask Scotracer as I nearly emptied my gauge clip into him a few feet away and he lived to grab a cup of coffee, tie his shoe, change outfits, then blast me. Don't ever say the Shotty is equal to the original. That's just tomfoolery. |

Nice ideas Remix and Grindstone I know I had a few mistakes after posting this and this beta will continue to change. I mean today the Banshee was made available and I complained how it wasn't. Bungie making me look dumb lol. But yeah I had a few mistakes, but I covered so much material. That's a cop out though. I just may take you up on your idea and make another impressiosn article following June 10th |

Hmm, I think you (Jacob Corbain) should label this your preliminary impressions on the Halo 3 beta, and the write another article after June 10th. The reason for this is that you failed to realize that the Rocket Launcher does not track, whereas the Missile pod does, the shotgun IS more powerful, much like unto the Halo 1 version, however, it only holds 6 rounds.
I'll agree that it is an exceptional beta, and more I play it, the more addicted I become. It consumes my passive thoughts and I find myself plotting game plans during the interim. Anyway, play it some more, you're missing information. |

just finally read through the article :D. I completely agree with how it feels when ur running.. i just wanna hit the turbo button. But i think thats more perception than anything. When you watch someone run, it seems like a good pace. Would you really want to be trying to snipe off spartans that ran faster?? Besides, then the levels wouldnt seem so large and expansive, so i think its about right.
I think an adrenaline power up would be great.. give it like a speed boost and maybe the power to do a "1 hit weapon smack" kill. That would add some fun :D
Also, just as a graphical touch with a bit of strategy in the mix, id like to see maybe lil patches of fog in Valhalla and maybe in the ice level. It would give it a bit of atmosphere and make it easy for someone to hide in for a shield regeneration or some quick sniping. Whatcha think? |

dakota, while i respect (cough cough) ur opinion.. i dont see the validity in it.
Halo3 represents a much closer return to things that made halo1 the game it was. I used to host weekly H1 tourneys till H2 came out. I was completely dissapointed by H2... they just changed everything around and it was for the worse. This B-E-T-A shows me that they worked hard to not only set things right again, but improve on things. This is a BETA, it does not represent the final graphix and coding of the game. It is NOT A DEMO. God i get so tired of the confusion. Beta is not a word for Demo. They have little to do w/ eachother.
I for one, after nearly swearing off halo (and a good portion of my prior posts can attest to that) am completely suprized and happy with the direction H3 seems to be going in. I find my self happily waiting for H3's debut for the first time in a very long time. |

I dont know what any of you are talking about. halo 3 is offically the best game ever. 100 times better that Halo 2. Yea, it looks exactly the same for the most part but it feels soooo much better! |

DakotaDevil, you care to elaborate on how Halo 3 is more noobified? Don't just state things, give details please. And I don't think I missed any point about Halo 3. You say the point is that the beta is Halo 2.5. How is that a point? That is an opinion and this article written by me is just that an opinion. Simply put, I didn't miss any point; you did. The point is that you failed to notice that this is a Halo 3 Beta IMPRESSION. It's my impression of the game. Your argument didn't make much sense. |

Wow I'm completely disappointed in this review. You seem to be missing the point that this is nothing but Halo 2.5, which isn't good by my book since Halo2 was such a HUGE disappointment. Now I know this is a beta but it still looks like Halo:CE is still going to be the best game in the series by FAR. I spent a good portion of Wednesday and Thursday playing the beta and have not played it since. Although I feel that Halo3 will be better than Halo2, I still feel that it seems ever MORE noobified than halo2 felt. I was hoping for a more similar experience to Halo:CE and once again have been disappointed. Well at least this will more than likely be the last game in the series, for my heart can take no more pain. |
