Which Makes More Money: Halo 3 or Spiderman?

    by Matt Gibbs

We all know that Halo 3 is going to be an extremely profitable title for Microsoft, but just how profitable? The LA Times has published an interesting article that not only provides a lot of numbers to consider, but also to compare against movie releases such as Spiderman 3.

While Halo 3 will likely gross over $150 million on it's first day of release, which is more than Spiderman 3 made in its opening 3 days, the later will eclipse the overall revenue made by Halo. However in terms of profit margins, you are looking at 46% for Spiderman 3, while it may be as high as 90% for Halo. Or do you want to know more about costs?

The total cost to Microsoft for Halo 3: a little more than $60 million. Development costs will probably be just above $30 million, given an elite team of 300 full-time artists and programmers working for three years on the game at Bungie, the internal Microsoft studio that created the games, said Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities. Bonuses to key developers and artists will probably add $25 million to the tab, Pachter said. Though about $15 million to $20 million in television marketing will be spent promoting the game, the majority will be footed by marketing partners such as Pepsi, Burger King and Pontiac that want to ride the Halo 3 hype.

Head over to the LA Times website for more reading.
