I wasn't talking about a genre.. if you talk about genres, give me science fiction (dune's genre) and make another science fiction movie totally different, happens all the time.
i HAVE nothing against using proven concepts, in fact it's a good thing to do. Get inspiration from other movies, or books, it's a way to create our own art, and it's ok. Original ideas are harder to come up with, and each time harder because the number of art objects available increases all the time. But getting inspiration from another movie is one thing, copying another movie is different, it's like you want to have the other's movie success using all their stuff, so you don't have to do nothing, you just copy what they did. That's not cool. Sure, a lot of hollywood movies use old formulas from older sucessful movies to assure success, that's why original movies are the best.
Just as an example, one of my favorite and most original movies was TOP GUN ... recently, like some months ago, i watched THE GUARDIAN ... which copies some scenes from top gun, but instead of the navy, they have the coastguard. In Top Gun there's this scene in the bar where the pilots bet on who's gonna pick up a girl..... exactly the same thing happens in the guardian.. i was watching it and i realized HEY this is a total copy of top gun lol but i liked top gun, so i liked the guardian too and the similar scenes, because they weren't trying to hide the "copy".... they just put it out there, like they are saying... this is a copy of top gun, but we all like it (or something like that). And in the end of the movie, they copied the ending of armageddon by having two guys, the older and more experient one gives his life to save the younger one. So yeah..... it was cool anyway lol.. |

99% of games and movies are HIGHLY DERIVITIVE OF THE GENRE it's just a fact of life and business. Sinking millions of dollars into a project with all new concepts is risky, using proven themes and proven concepts will help assure a dependable return on the investent capital. |

So like i played the turok demo, and it's an ok game, i didn't finish it because the end was hard, it had many enemies and i didn't have enough bullets so they killed me, and i gave up after a few tries, it's not that great to keep you interested..
But, what let me down the most, was a scene (cutscene) that is a total copy of dune, come on people, no new ideas? no originality? Sure, yonger folks might not recongize it, since they have never seen the movie dune, which is an old classic, but it's exactly like the movie, the black suits, the guy with a beard, the knife attacks, lol...
I'm not putting the game down (or am I? lol), i just don't like to see a movie or a game using ideas from other sucessful movies, just to "be cool" like the original movie. It's like they can't stand on their own merits, with that said, i don't know much more about the game, so who knows maybe it's good after all. I liked to play some parts. |
