PS3 Partially to Blame for GTA IV Release Delay?

by Matt Gibbs

Speaking to MTV News, Jeronimo Barrera from Rockstar has said that the Playstation 3 was at least partially to blame for the delay in the release date of Grand Theft Auto IV.

"It's really no surprise to anybody that the PS3 was definitely a contributing factor to that. Now, we're neck and neck. That's not an issue anymore. But back then that was something we were taking into account. That's not to say there's anything wrong with the PS3 version. It's awesome. They're both identical."

But before we start gloating, remember that the Xbox 360 version was looking a little dodgy at times, with the rumored requirements of a hard drive to run the game.

Check out the full article over at MTV here. Grand Theft Auto IV will ship worldwide on April 29 this year.

Get your head out your azz and get a life, i'm sure there is more you could be doing then playing your crap box like getting a girl. lol

I95SOUTH, let's take the fanboy hat off for a second, shall we? 1st, your 'facts' are no more valid than mine so lets not pretend to know anymore than we already do - which is zilcho. 2nd, the development of COD4 has absolutely no relevance to GTA4 as each project is unique and studios have their own styles and methods of getting the consoles to do what they want. 3rd, the argument that the PS3 is 'better' entirely depends on what you are looking at; in terms of RAM, Graphics and CPU processing, both are fairly well-matched (in fact, the X360 holds an advantage) - the only thing the PS3 exceeds in is the incorporation of SPE processors which have already proven to be troublesome for developers due to a buggy development kit.(THIS IS FACT - LOOK IT UP IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE ME) The Blu-ray capability has no relevance either - it is simply another ROM storage medium. What IS relevant is how R* has designed the game to overcome the severe shortage of RAM found in both the X360 AND the PS3. The most obvious and sensible answer is a swap file - and for that, you need a hard drive. Here - I've even found a nice Wiki article for you: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swap_file

Be for real! The ps3 wasn't the problem for the delay for gta4 being release. It was that they were taking their sweet time. And they said something about 360 hard drive...pick one rockstar. When the team of COD4 was ask they said that" we had a team work on ps3 and a team work on xbox. And not only did they make a great game, it came out on RELEASE DATE as planed. So other developers need to take a page out of their book and use it. Hands down ps3 is more powerful and better, so others will have to work inside their teamss to get the job done. -->rabbitc, get facts not what you want to happen to ps3 because its not going to happen.

The hard drive may be the slowest component on the bus - but it is still yards faster than the disc drive in terms of seek time and transfer speeds. Also, the disc is read only which means that the disc drive cannot be used as a temporary read-write buffer; larger games often employ something called a 'swap file' to retain information beyond the constraints of the RAM (in-built memory) - as the X360 only has 512MB to spare, this would undoubtedly become more important on games which exist on a much vaster scale such as GTA4. This has nothing to do with disc capacity as it is unlikely that even the largest PS3 game would fill a dual-layer DVD employed by the X360 (9 GB) - it is about memory management, buffering and speed, nothing more. I'd stake my money that the PS3 version of GTA4 makes similiar use of its own hard drive for the same reasons.

How would the Hard Drive help compared to the Disc Drive? In any computer, the slowest part is the hard drive itself because its still electro-mechanical. In a few years you wont even see hard drives as they are internally in a computer anyways. And no matter the developing problems, 360s can not deny the fact that our older generation discs can not hold enough, not compared to blu-ray.

Just dont buy the ps3 version if you have a ps3 or your going to have the same problems you have with Assassins Creed, freezings, slow framerate, poor AI, the ps3 fucked itself over and now devs have to delay and work harder making the ps3 version of a 360 game, i wish devs would just dump sony and help MS destroy the ps3 brand

The hard drive will play a key role in buffering common data that the disc player can't relay quick enough. Hard drives are usefull things which is why PC gaming has been prominent for so long.

So why would the new GTA require use of the harddrive? Could we expect the graphics to be on par (or better) with the current top shelf 360 games? That would have to be a HUGE improvement from their track record of being a few steps behind in the graphics dept. Not that I really care, the GTA gameplay usually makes up for the lack of graphical innovation, I'm just sayin'...

well Beowolf that sickening reminds me of being back in Algabra class in highschool and constantly having to wait for the slow kids to catch up so the rest of us could proceed to the next lesson.

It was obvious from the start that GTAIV got delayed because of the PS3. Back in September, the PS3 version was so far behind the 360 version that we never saw a single thing from it. Everything that was shown was always from the 360 version. What really sucks is that Rockstar basically had to hold up on the 360 version for the PS3 version to catch up.

I don't understand the Problem with Requiring a HardDrive to play a Top end game... I know that one of the selling point of a 360 was that you don't need a hard Drive to play games but that was 2 years ago! Now Game Developers have started to fully use the capabilities of the 360 and limiting them to the bare bones performance of a driveless 360 is Foolish and Retarded.

Is anyone surprised? Game studios have been complaining about the PS3's development kit for a while. I'm shocked that Sony has even made an attempt to improve it. It's bad news for Sony - because news like that might scare of some studios from developing for the PS3 altogether if they know that added expense and heartache is involved.
