Grand Theft Auto IV Chews up Records and Spits Them Out

by Eric Bush

New York, NY – May 7, 2008 – Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), said today that Grand Theft Auto IV has surpassed all-time entertainment records for day one and week one sales by dollar value. Released on Tuesday, April 29th, Grand Theft Auto IV, the critically acclaimed video game, has sold through to consumers approximately 6 million units globally with an estimated retail value of more than $500 million in the first week. Grand Theft Auto IV sold approximately 3.6 million units on its opening day with a retail value of approximately $310 million globally.

"We knew Grand Theft Auto IV would break new ground in terms of the player's experience, with its compelling story line, extraordinary gameplay and action that ranges over a broad urban canvas. Now, it has broken sales and rating records as well. Grand Theft Auto IV's first week performance represents the largest launch in the history of interactive entertainment, and we believe these retail sales levels surpass any movie or music launch to date. We congratulate the entire Rockstar team on creating a must-have experience that takes the legendary Grand Theft Auto franchise to a new level," said Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two.

"Rockstar's goal is to make each new title in the Grand Theft Auto franchise even better than those that preceded it, and Grand Theft Auto IV is a smashing success on that score. Grand Theft Auto IV makes full use of the power of next generation technology, and offers players an experience unique in the interactive entertainment medium. This game sets a new standard in the industry, with critics hailing it as both an artistic and technological masterpiece," said Ben Feder, Take-Two's Chief Executive Officer.

Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto IV for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system is rated "M" for Mature. For more information, log onto www.rockstargames.com/IV.

Not only is it at least 3-to-1 with 360 version sales over PS3 version sales, but many who originally bought the PS3 version are trading it back because it's nearly unplayable. When all is said and done, the PS3 version fiasco will have pushed many of the Sony fanclub to switch to the console that can actually handle GTA IV. Since this only means more $$ for the 360 version of games, it therefore means more 360 games, including more Halo. Still, though, while GTA broke records, you still have to give Halo credit for selling as much as it did with an exclusive console release. Personally, both games are fantastic and I thank my lucky stars that I didn't buy a PS3. Imagine not having Halo or a workable version of GTA IV.

oh come on, everyone predicted it would break a record, even take2. You act like there is an even split on sales, sickpup. i could be wrong, but I bet its easily a 3-1 ratio of 360 vs ps3 games sold. many more peeps have a 360, and its going to have all the content, so peeps like me with both consoles are going to get the 360 version for sure. If it is 3-1, that is right about the same sales as H3.

I predicted this in a post before the game was released.

I agree with you, two systems is not the same as one game on ONE system but the numbers are still impressive no matter what you say.....

This record is BS and Take-two can claim whatever they want. Until there is a single console comparison of sales Halo 3 should still be the raining champion. GTA IV was a dual console release and can not be compared to a single console release. Halo 3 sold 300M in first week sales. If you split the 500M from GTA between PS3 and Xbox 360 it looks to me like they failed to match Halo 3.
