Peter Jackson's King Kongby Arthur K
King Kong is a well known classic movie from the 1930's featuring a 50 foot gorilla that is captured and brought to New York City. Peter Jackson's recent remake of the movie added many new plot elements and a deeper look into Skull Island, the location of where most of the game takes place. Your character is Jack Driscoll (played by Adrien Brody) and you are a famous screen writer. You are trapped on Skull Island while Carl Denham (played by Jack Black) is filming a movie staring Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts), soon enough you are attacked by various creatures that inhabit this island. The creatures are very frightful and humongous; they range from huge caterpillars to raptors.
It's not long before you are captured by the island's natives who sacrifice Ann to King Kong. Your journey as Jack then takes you on the trail of Kong, while trying to save Ann. The game itself doesn't introduce that much new story to what the movie brings, it just extends the fights and the struggle to survive while on Skull Island.
The game is divided into two parts, Jack's first person view and Kong's third person view. The Kong chapters are very fun and they are some of the game's best parts, playing a huge, angry, strong gorilla is as entertaining as it gets. Meanwhile, Jack is stuck to doing the same tasks over and over. The objectives you get are extremely easy and repeat themselves over and over. Some of the tasks include finding levers to open doors and burning down "deadly bushes", which can be achieved by either shooting down a skull on fire or lighting your spear and using it as a torch.
Aiming in the game is easy and most enemies can likewise be taken down easily, especially when you are using powerful weapons such as the Tommy or the Sniper Rifle. The rest of the time you will be throwing spears and bones shaped like spears. You will almost constantly be shooting bugs and an occasional V-Rex. This can sometimes even take you out of the movie experience, the movie itself only features in a very small scene where the actors are fighting off insects, yet this is the central, and longest, part of the game. Your only real motivation to kill all the insects is so you can play with Kong in the next level.
There isn’t much replay value in King Kong. With the lack of any sort of Live/Co-Op play, you won’t find yourself going back to the game once you have beaten it. The achievements are all easy and there is only a few. There isn’t any sort of collectibles in the game to extend the length of the game.
