Call of Duty 2 Breaks the Million Markby Nelson Rodriguez
Activision's World War II first-person shooter is the first Xbox 360 game to sell over one-million copies in the United States. The game can also boast $1,000,000 in sales just from downloadable map packs. I knew I should have dedicated myself to becoming a cartographer!
That kind of download success is a huge incentive for some developers to leave a couple of maps behind for later release, when first launching a game. But, if the figures are any indicator, many gamers won't mind.
Activision is not alone in the Million Seller club. Both Ubisoft's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, and Bethesda's Oblivion have found over one million Xbox 360 homes as well. In fact, GRAW and Oblivion accomplished the same feat in less time, having been released later.
Many will point out that COD2 had very little competition for a 360 owner's dollars in those pioneering days of late 2005 early 2006, but it has fared far better than other early starters, like Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero.
So, next time you're at one of those fancy cocktail parties you like to go to, and someone asks the inevitable "Aren't World War II games so over?", adjust your cummerbund, take a swig of the fancy stuff and say "Apparently not, my dear. Apparently not."
