Video game sales data compiled by Media Create Sales shows that for a second week in a row the Xbox 360 managed to sell more units than the PlayStation 3 in Japan. This strong momentum of Microsoft's system in the land of the rising sun is due in part to Tales of Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery, with the recent price cut also contributing to these exceptional sales.
On September 11, Microsoft cut the prices of its Xbox 360 systems in Japan, offering one model at a lower price than the Nintendo Wii. The price of the entry-level Xbox 360 Arcade was cut to ¥19,800 ($180) from ¥27,800. The Xbox 360 Premium edition, which comes with a 60GB hard drive, is now sold for ¥29,800 ($270), while the Xbox 360 Elite was cut to ¥39,800 ($370) from ¥47,800 ($440).
For the week ended September 21, 2008, Japanese consumers bought 13,777 Xbox 360 systems, while the PlayStation 3 sold 8,156 units. Like almost every week, Nintendo sold more units of its Wii system than the Xbox 360 and PS3 sales combined. Below you find the pie with all the numbers:
