Rumor: Crackdown 2 in the Works at Real Time Worlds

    by Eric Bush

In a recent podcast hosted by the Xbox Live Director of Programming Larry Hryb, the Microsoft employee expressed his desires to see a sequel to Real Time Worlds' sandbox third-person shooter. Microsoft Game Studios boss Phil Spencer replied back, saying: "Yes, Crackdown's one of my favorites. I'll leave it at that."

Today, new information coming from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean lead us to believe a sequel to last year's sleeper hit may indeed be in the works. U.K. video game publication Edge reported on its web site that key members of the original Crackdown development group have departed Real Time Worlds to create their own company called Ruffian Games. Since Microsoft owns the Crackdown intellectual property, it is plausible that the software giant could hire Ruffian Games to create a sequel.

Is there anything wrong between Microsoft and Realtime Worlds? Not at all. The latter is currently busy creating APB (All Points Bulletin), an ambitious massively multiplayer online video game that promises to take everything we liked about Crackdown to a whole new level.
