Harmonix and MTV Games came out swinging in the music game genre in 2007 and 2008, releasing back-to-back full versions of Rock Band in as many years. But the companies have backed away from that cycle this year, choosing not to release Rock Band 3 in 2009. That's according to a speech Harmonix CEO Alex Rigopolous gave at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas yesterday.
"We've actually made a choice to break out of the annual release cycle for Rock Band this year," Rigopolous said at the Billboard Digital Music Live conference at the show, according to Crispy Gamer. "[This is] partly because the annual cycle places limits on the choices you can make as a developer. We're trying to take a long term view."
But just because Harmonix has no plans for a full Rock Band game this year, that doesn't mean there won't be a music game. The Beatles, a Rock Band-style title featuring the Liverpool legends' songs, is still on track for release this year.
