Make Custom Highlight Reels with NBA 2K7 Premium Contentby Nelson Rodriguez
2K Sports is getting into the game this week, by offering a downloadable add-on for their NBA 2K7 title, that will allow you to edit replays. This download will cost you. Is this the beginning of a nasty trend? Will the next-next gen consoles come with a credit card swiper just to activate a game?
While the Reelmaker from 2K at least adds some interactive functionality to your experience, they are asking 400 points for it, and it sure seems like a cousin of EA's tutorial video scheme.
If this new breed of nickel and dime content leaves you cold, you should continue to yell about it from the highest mountain. An employee at a major publisher, who asked to remain unidentified, admitted to me that all the publishers are looking at EA's downloadable content experiment to see if fans will bite.
If we fall for it, expect all the publishers to handicap their games so that you can shell out extra cash for content that should have come witth the game at retail. The business of business is business, even when the product is games. Just remember, our wallets speak loudly. And that may not just mean refusing to buy the DLC; it might have to extend to refusing to buy a title at all, unless it comes fully functional out of the package.
The editor is available now, though not in Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore, or Taiwan. If you're one of the brave volunteers, please let us know if it is worth it.
