Roll Your Own XBL Content With 2K Reelmakerby Nelson Rodriguez
The video editing tool, announced a while back as a premium download feature for NBA 2K7, is setting itself apart as a genuinely new option in console gaming. You will soon, for a fee, be able to distribute your own Xbox Live content around the world.
2K Sports let us know today that the Reelmaker is finally available and that it will include the option to upload your edited highlight reels onto the marketplace for other NBA 2K7 owners to download. Reelmaker will cost 400 Microsoft points, and is supposed to be a robust video editor, with commentator sound clips and special effects capabilities, to make your videos shine.
I couldn't begin to imagine wanting someone else's highlight reels, but this marketplace feature points to some thrilling possibilities for other games. Consider being able to produce your own machinima movies or game tutorials and distributing them instantly on Xbox Live.
I am not much of a fan of nickel and dime content on the marketplace, and I know that PC users can upload their creations onto the web for all to see, but democratic access to a targeted network like the marketplace is something new and different.
I am sure that content will be tightly controlled as publishers experiment with user-created uploads, but the $1.65 billion sale of You Tube this month hints at big companies wanting to experiment more and more with letting us regular folk stir up our own content recipes.
